Addison’s Bar and Lounge, 1. E. Franklin, Minneapolis. Don’t know anything about this place, but I found this matchbook online, so what the heck? Besides, doesn’t “lounge” call for a lounge singer? Street, 2. 01. 6From their website: Every legend has to start someplace. Ours begins with Al Baisi who played for the Chicago Bears in the 1. He was a tough, uncompromising SOB.
And we have no idea what the people who didn’t like him thought. In 1. 94. 9, Al partnered with Larry Lehner to run the joint and the club became known as Alary’s Club Bar, (Al & Larry – mystery solved.) By the early 1. Lehner was out of the picture but Al continued on. Al passed unexpectedly on April 1. Neither pro football nor this world will see many more like him. Alary’s shows up early and often in the newsletter of the St. Paul Musicians’ Union.
Alkali Ike’s Eatery and Saloon was on Highway 1. Hi Shopping Center in Minnetonka. In July 1. 97. 3, Jody and the Jonquils performed nightly in the Saloon: “Their original dance routines and their variety of pop tunes, country western music and show tunes have entertained thousands of audiences.” Another ad was for Delores Del- Rae and Her Vitamin E Trio – I’ll bet that was a fun act! Ad dated February 2.
Allen’s Tavern, St. Paul – jazz venue. The Aloha Club Ballroom was on Highway 1. Prior Lake in 1. 95.
Dance by Moonlight – comfortably heated – on Beautiful Spring Lake. No age limit. Percy Hughes, Judy, and Dickie Mayes performed Fridays and Saturdays in April.

A new (1. 99. 9) building sits there today. The A- frame building had three levels and was frequented by stewardesses, pilots, and other airline folks due to its proximity to the airport. In July 1. 96. 6, Will Jones reported that when it opened there was a Dixieland band and the plan was to have some Dixie, some rock, some “banjo singalong.” After a few weeks, though, It became all rock. Jones’ description of the place was pretty visceral: It’s easy to understand why, after a recent look- in on a Saturday night.

The Cocktail Lounge might have had some live music. The Mandalay Lounge had a piano bar, for many years featuring Marilyn Sellars.

James Theophilius Aladubi Babington- Johnson, Jr., known as Tafi. Tafi had been a dining car waiter for the Great Northern Railway, got a degree in political science and worked for Honeywell and the Institute of African- American Studies. The club was a restaurant/supper club featuring live jazz and folk.
Ahmad Jamal Trio played at the opening, and Young/Holt Unlimited did two weeks at the end of 1. The Insider described it as a “Playboy- type operation.” Jazz just didn’t bring in customers and it closed after three months. An article from July 1. Danny and Gary Stevens were trying to line up financing to buy it and convert it to a rock venue called the Fillmore, but it was gone by 1.
Sutton Place Disco – April 1, 1. Summer 1. 97. 8. Sutton Place “began as a quiet neighborhood bar in the Sumner/Glenwood area of North Minneapolis . It was an unpretentious establishment owned by a heterosexual married couple, Harold and Elizabeth Sutton.” It became a gay disco, and apparently the fun was gone when too many straights showed up. I don’t know how long it was Ernie’s but certainly during the Fox Trap/Taste/Wells Fargo years and I bet during Sutton’s and earlier, too.”Fox Trap – There by late ’7. Hennepin Ave. Anglesey is an island off the north west coast of Wales. From 1. 94. 0- 4. Earl Irons’ dance band was the house band, playing a little jazz. An undated and unsigned memo (probably from the mid 1. Minneapolis Bridge Co. Each filed a $5. 00 suit against Sampanis. The Minneapolis Spokesman reported that others had contacted the paper with complaints about discrimination.
In 1. 96. 3 it hosted folk groups like the Countrymen and the Jolly Swagmen, but Will Jones noted that the owners were looking to kick out all the rock . In 1. 97. 0 there was the Regency Room for dining and dancing and the Surrey Room Piano Bar. In 2. 01. 5 James Lileks wrote about about the Restaurant that no one remembers: It looks rather crammed and inelegant to modern eyes; potted plants hanging off the wall isn’t in favor these days. Don’t know when the picture was taken, but it’s not like they had a few years before the place closed. The e. Bay matchbook says the Anglesey was celebrating its 2.
